(regenerative medicine)
The
goal of regenerative medicine is to create real organs that function properly.
Regenerative medicine is still in the early stages of development. Since
regenerative medicine is experimental, it is limited to procedures that include
making layers of skin for wounds for the public. In 1999 a team in wake forest was able to
produce a lab grown bladder for a patient. They are also able to make other
tissues, organs and even salivary glands. In 2007 orthopedic surgeon Cato
layrecin put together a team in Virginia to investigate tissue engineered ligaments,
to allow people to recover efficiently and fast from a torn ACL knee injury.
Other researchers are also studying how to reproduce stem cells quick and
efficiently to repair damaged muscles and nerves from spinal cord injuries. J
